Westerlo officially signed 21‑year‑old David Nicolas Amegnaglo from German Bundesliga side Freiburg on 8 July 2026. The youngster has agreed to a four‑year contract and is expected to make up for the 11 goals lost when striker Nacho Ferri left after the 2025/26 season.

Who is Amegnaglo and what does he bring?

Born in France and also eligible for Togo, Amegnaglo came to the Belgian top through Freiburg’s reserve team. In the Regionalliga Südwest during the 2025/26 campaign he featured in 31 matches, netted 13 times and provided seven assists. His versatility allows him to play both as a centre‑forward and on the wing.

He has yet to make a senior Bundesliga appearance, but his lower‑division stats show clear progression. Westerlo’s scouting report highlighted his strong finishing and pace, traits that the team has missed since Ferri’s departure.

Why does Westerlo opt for a young talent?

Westerlo has long followed a policy of recruiting young, developable players with the aim of selling them later at a profit. Ferri’s exit, after scoring 11 goals in a single season, left a gap up front. Amegnaglo fits this model perfectly: he is young, has a proven scoring record at a lower level and possesses the potential to thrive in the Jupiler Pro League.

Club manager Jonas Vandenbussche explained that the club “looks for a player who can not only score immediately but also grow and become a solid investment later”. The four‑year deal gives both player and club ample time for that development.

What does the signing mean for Westerlo’s campaign?

With Amegnaglo’s arrival, Westerlo expects a more balanced attack. The club currently sits eighth in the Jupiler Pro League (as of 7 July 2026) and has shown mixed form in recent weeks. The new forward should relieve pressure on the midfielders and add variety in the final third.

Coach Peter Van Houdt stated he wants to integrate the young French‑Togolese attacker within the first weeks of the new season. “He has the physical attributes and technical skills to make an immediate impact,” Van Houdt said at the press conference. Fans can therefore look forward to fresh dynamism up front as Westerlo continues its push for European competition.
